A September in New Orleans
Hi! My name is Ishita Goel and I am a current Pharmacology master's student at the Tulane School of Medicine. This blog will mainly serve as a diary of my community service and my academic experiences throughout the year.
A little about me...I went to Tulane for my undergraduate education which helped with my transition to this program and to living downtown in New Orleans. While this is true, it has definitely taken me some time to adjust to the academic load, more specifically the amount of information that is given in a certain amount of time. Overall, through the help of my newfound friends and the supportive instructors, I have improved my study skills, organization, and time management to handle the challenges of the program. As a neuroscience graduate, so far, I am enjoying the content and I am excited to delve deeper into my passion through these courses! So far, we have covered the basic principles of pharmacology, a large portion of which I had the opportunity to learn through previous courses in my undergraduate years. Following this, we began to apply those principles to specific clinical concepts. First, we learned about NSAIDs, histamines, corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants during our inflammation module. Following this, we covered antivirals, antifungals, and antibiotics during our infectious disease modules. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience to learn the physiology and chemistry behind medications that are so commonly taken or prescribed, from ibuprofen to acetaminophen to amoxicillin.
While this blog is also a diary of my community service, I was unable to complete any hours this month. However, I am looking forward to volunteering my time to a cause I am passionate about and documenting my experiences here!
Until next time,
Ishita
